GFT equals FutsalA handful of Espoo-based football players were among the first ones to play futsal in Finland. The first games were played in the mid-1990’s. As most of the players played football for FC Honka it was natural to form the futsal team under the same organisation. FC Honka participated in the early futsal championship tournaments and later, as the tournaments developed to a league, Honka was there. As the sport and league developed even further, the idea about founding a club focusing on futsal only came alive. After a few years, in spring 2002, it was time to make the idea into reality. The challenges of being a secondary sport in a football club became more evident all the time. Honka acknowledged the conflict of interests and kindly gave the futsal team an opportunity to develop its activities as a separate club. Honka released the place in the league to the newly founded futsal team, Golden Futsal Team. The transition worked smoothly and Golden Futsal Team could start from top level with old and experienced players. The name was to be both a target and an omen: To always go for the gold! And so it was. Already in its first season, GFT made it to the league finals finishing third in 2002. The following year (2003) GFT then made it all the way. Gold medals were received after victory over the up to that most successful futsal club in Finland, Futsal Team Kemi-Tornio (FTK), in the final. As champions GFT got to participate in the UEFA cup. Although the team did not qualify from the first round it still showed that it can play evenly with European top teams. Success in European games was and still is waiting, but after winning the Finnish Futsal Cup in spring 2005 and then the Super Cup in autumn 2005, GFT has won everything there is to win in Finland within only 4 years from the founding of the club. Despite its profile as one of the top clubs in Finnish futsal, GFT does not only want to concentrate in the league-level games. The club wants to develop the sport of futsal on all possible levels. The second team, GFT/2, was founded in 2003 and GFT Old Boys in 2004. These events gave many more players the possibility to enjoy the game. These teams also serve as a possibility for league players to continue their careers after the league. In 2006 a fourth team was founded, this time mainly consisting of young players under the age of 20. This young team will hopefully grow future league players. Besides the actual game, GFT has also participated in beach soccer, the cousin to futsal. GFT is here to stay and will work to raise the awareness of futsal also in the future. The club strives to serve exciting events and games full of action to its players as well as supporters. The club has already had some success but this is only a beginning. The club is on top level to stay. According to its name it will always go for the gold.
